On a HAWKs Adventure, Your Explorer Will…

Create A Deeper Connection To The Outdoors

Above all, HAWKs is designed as a refreshing, simple program. Meant to help kids develop a better sense of themselves, and of the world, through first-hand experience. By moving through and discovering nature for themselves, our explorers grow to understand the outdoors from the inside, out.

Create A Deeper Connection To The Outdoors

Play Games & Activities

There's never a dull moment on a HAWKs adventure. We integrate fun games and activities into our program that focus on nature. Playing games outside will provide your explorers a life long appreciation for the outdoors as a fun place to spend time.

Make Arts & Crafts

Creativity comes with the territory at HAWKs. On all of our treks and trails, our experienced educators help turn learning into doing. Explorers might make their own leaf imprint fossils, build butterfly nectar feeders, create native seed bombs, knot together sticky bracelets from found materials, or create a nature journal of their findings.

Make Arts & Crafts

Connect With Bug and Animal Species

HAWKs programming helps take the “creepy” out of “creepy-crawlies,” by helping explorers naturally get comfortable and have fun with the ecosystem surrounding us. They’ll spend time getting up-close and personal with friendly praying mantes, learning about the role of pollinators, and gaining a more thorough understanding of everything from predators to prey out in the wild.

Make New Friends and Develop Teamwork Skills

Every trail and trek helps our explorers build cooperation and teamwork. But beyond that: HAWKs adventures help our explorers discover their voices. From communicating closely with their guides, to meeting and making lifelong friends: kids will take back with them much more than the dirt and dust on their shoes.

Make New Friends and Develop Teamwork Skills

Learn Trail Safety and Leave No Trace Principles

Before anyone steps foot onto a trail, HAWKs explorers spend time learning a deep respect for our green spaces. They’ll understand how to safely navigate terrain, and follow “Leave No Trace” principles like planning ahead, and minimizing our impact on our natural surroundings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Contact us

Where is HAWKs located?

HAWKs uses green spaces in your selected region. The week prior to camp, educators email locations for the day or week.

If you have selected Venture Van transportation, pick up and drop off will be at the designated park. HAWKs will transport explorers to the day’s location.

What is a typical day like?

No day out in nature will be exactly alike and will evolve depending on the environment, the weather, our explorers' level of hiking experience and energy that day. Check out some of our activities here (link to where the activities are on the site)

How far will my explorer be hiking?

Our educators are experienced in adjusting hikes to fit a group's abilities. In general, 5-7-year-olds should expect to hike about a mile daily with 8-12-year-olds average 3-4 miles. Snack and water breaks, lunch, games, activities and exploration break up the day’s hike. Our Red Tail Treks are longer, more intensive hikes - expect distances of up to 10 miles with varying degrees of elevation. Red Tail Treks are for explorers 11+.

How do you stay cool when it’s hot out?

Our educators carry water to ensure explorers stay hydrated. Each group will have 2 10-liter water bladders to refill explorers’ water bottles throughout the day. Explorers take frequent water breaks. For younger explorers, our camp "drinking games" make staying hydrated more fun.

During July, August and September, we rotate locations under a canopy of majestic native trees that cool the temperature between 10-15 degrees, or otherwise sheltered or indoor locations. Locations are often near a body of water where explorers can cool themselves.

Please note that ALL of our water location will be shallow, no more than ankle/shin height. Swimming is not allowed.

What if it rains?

Exploring in the rain is an incredible opportunity to see firsthand its necessity, how rain travels, and its impact on the environment around us. Plus educators can discuss the long-term effects of the rain cycle, changing rain patterns, and climate change.

We also choose locations with rain cover (e.g., covered picnic area, bridge cover, thick tree canopies) so that explorers' backpacks stay dry and explorers can take breaks from the rain. We also rent out space at nature centers or other facilities.

Explorers have a great day when they have the right gear – muddy buddies, rain suits, rain jackets and weather-proof hiking boots are required.

That said, HAWKs closely monitors the forecast and adjusts accordingly. Safety is our priority.
